The quick answer
A picture frame's named size generally describes the artwork it is designed to hold. The visible opening and outside frame are different measurements. A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm; A2 is 42 × 59.4 cm. Before ordering, confirm what the selected size includes, especially when adding a mat border.

Rectangle dimensions are listed portrait-first; reverse width and height for landscape. Panoramic sizes are width × height. Inch equivalents are rounded to two decimals. These are configurator size labels, not verified finished outside dimensions. Check the frame and mat options before planning a tight fit.
Close does not mean interchangeable. A 60 × 90 cm size is approximately 23.62 × 35.43 inches. A 24 × 36 inch print is 60.96 × 91.44 cm. Measure the print you actually have before buying a frame for it.

03 / Measure once, choose confidently
Photo size, mat opening or outside frame?
Keep these three measurements separate. It is the easiest way to avoid a print that does not fit, hidden image details or a finished frame that is larger than expected.

Measure the whole artwork
Record the full width and height of an existing print. For a digital photo, begin with its aspect ratio and original pixel dimensions.

Decide what should stay visible
A frame lip or mat opening may cover part of the edge. Keep faces, signatures and text away from the proposed crop.

Check the finished outside size
Ask for the edge-to-edge dimensions of the frame with your chosen mat option. Use those measurements for the wall layout.
A mat can reduce the visible image within a fixed frame or require a larger frame when the image size is kept fixed. The ordering system determines which dimension stays constant.

The right size starts with the right shape
Changing a photo's proportions means cropping it or adding space around it. A large family group might suit a landscape rectangle; a single face or pet can work beautifully in a square. Check the actual composition before choosing.

Common photo sizes and A-series sizes
You will see both inch-based photo formats and metric paper formats in Australia. These reference tables include sizes outside Framely’s listed glass-front range, so you can identify an existing photo, poster or document.
A2 is not 50 × 70 cm. A2 measures 42 × 59.4 cm. A 50 × 70 cm print is 8 cm wider and 10.6 cm taller, with a slightly different shape.

Choose the photo, then plan the wall
There is no single correct frame size for a family portrait. A close-up can work at a modest size; a large group may need more scale so the faces remain clear from where you will view it.
Match the composition
Use portrait for a tall subject, landscape for a group or scene, square for a centred subject and panoramic for a deliberately wide photograph.
Try the size on the wall
Mark the finished outside frame dimensions with removable paper templates. Look from the doorway, sofa and normal viewing position.
Check the details
Review the crop, original file and mat choice together. For multiple frames, measure the whole arrangement, including every gap.
Gallery-wall calculation: total width = sum of the outside frame widths + all gaps between them.
For example, three frames that each measure 54 cm outside, with two 6 cm gaps, occupy 174 cm across. These are illustrative outside measurements, not specifications for a Framely size option.

Is A2 the same size as 50 × 70 cm?
No. A2 measures 42 × 59.4 cm, approximately 16.54 × 23.39 inches. A 50 × 70 cm print is larger and has a slightly different aspect ratio. Do not treat the two sizes as interchangeable.
Is 60 × 90 cm the same as 24 × 36 inches?
No. 60 × 90 cm converts to approximately 23.62 × 35.43 inches. A 24 × 36 inch print measures 60.96 × 91.44 cm. The formats share a 2:3 shape, but their physical dimensions differ.
Does a frame size include the outside border?
Usually the named size describes the artwork the frame accommodates. The finished outside dimensions also depend on the moulding and mat arrangement. Check what a seller’s selected size means and ask for the finished outside dimensions before planning a precise wall layout.
What size should I choose for a family portrait?
A2 or 50 × 70 cm can suit a medium feature, while 60 × 90 cm or 70 × 100 cm can give a larger portrait more presence. Choose orientation around the arrangement of the people. For a wide group, consider a landscape or panoramic format and check that the crop keeps every face visible.
Can I frame a phone photo in a square or panoramic size?
Yes, if the photo has enough detail and the crop works. A landscape phone photo may lose the sides in a square or the top and bottom in a panorama. Use the original file, check its actual aspect ratio and avoid important faces or text near the crop boundary.
Will adding a mat make the outside frame bigger?
It depends on which dimension the ordering system keeps fixed. If the image size stays fixed and a mat is added around it, a larger frame is needed. If the overall frame size stays fixed, the mat reduces the available image opening. Confirm how your chosen configuration handles the mat.
Are A4 and small 4 × 6 inch frames in this Framely range?
