The best file for printing is the original, full-resolution image, not a screenshot or a copy downloaded from social media. The number that matters most is its pixel dimensions, such as 4000 × 3000 pixels. Those pixels are spread across the final print size, which determines the effective pixels per inch (PPI) and how much fine detail can be reproduced.

Around 300 PPI is a useful target for a detailed photo print viewed up close. Lower effective resolution can still look good at larger sizes viewed from farther away, and image sharpness, compression, subject matter and print surface also affect the result. Divide the image's pixel width by the intended print width in inches to estimate the effective PPI.
Pixels, PPI and DPI
Pixels are the individual picture elements in your digital file. PPI describes how many of those pixels are assigned to each inch of the finished print. DPI describes the printer's physical ink dots and is not the same measurement. A file does not become more detailed simply because its metadata says 300 DPI; the actual pixel width and height are what determine how much image information is available.
How to Calculate Print Size from Pixels
Use this formula: print size in inches = pixel dimension ÷ target PPI. For example, a 3000 × 2400 pixel image can print at 10 × 8 inches at 300 PPI. To convert inches to centimetres, multiply by 2.54. Calculate width and height separately, then check that the result has the same aspect ratio as your chosen print.
Is 300 PPI Always Required?
No single number guarantees quality. A 300 PPI file gives plenty of detail for prints viewed closely, but a larger wall piece is normally viewed from farther away and may still look good at a lower effective PPI. Conversely, a blurry, heavily compressed or poorly focused image will not become sharp merely because it has many pixels. Cropping and Aspect Ratio
Resolution can fall after cropping because unwanted edges, and their pixels, are removed. Different print shapes also require different crops. A camera image in a 2:3 ratio fits 4 × 6 or 8 × 12 without changing shape, while an 8 × 10 print uses a 4:5 ratio. Keep faces, signatures and important details away from the crop boundary and review every edge in the configurator.
Before You Upload
Use the original image from the camera, phone, scanner or design application. Avoid screenshots, messaging-app copies and social-media downloads where possible. Check the pixel dimensions, confirm the image is sharp at normal size, remove accidental borders, and keep a backup before editing. Export at high quality and do not repeatedly save the same JPEG, because repeated compression can reduce detail.
Paper Prints and Canvas Prints
A smooth paper print is well suited to crisp photographic detail, text and fine line work. Canvas has a visible woven texture that can give an image a softer, more painterly character and can make tiny detail less prominent. What if the File Is Too Small?
Start by finding a larger original rather than enlarging a small copy. Upscaling software can add pixels, but it cannot reliably recreate detail that was never captured and may introduce artificial edges or texture. If the file is still marginal, a smaller print, a different crop or a canvas presentation viewed from farther away may be a better choice.
